What is Tafseer and Why is it Important?

Tafseer is derived from the Arabic word “Fasara”, which means to explain, clarify, or reveal. Tafseer is the science of understanding the Quran by examining its words, context, background, reasons of revelation, and relation to other verses. Tafseer also helps us to apply the Quran to our lives and situations.

Tafseer is important because it helps us to comprehend the Quran correctly and avoid misinterpretation or misunderstanding. The Quran is the word of Allah, and it contains guidance, wisdom, and mercy for all mankind. However, without proper Tafseer, we may miss out on its benefits or even go astray from its teachings.

The Quran itself emphasizes the need for Tafseer in several verses, such as:

– “It is He who has sent down to you, [O Muhammad], the Book; in it are verses [that are] precise – they are the foundation of the Book – and others unspecific. As for those in whose hearts is deviation [from truth], they will follow that of it which is unspecific, seeking discord and seeking an interpretation [suitable to them]. And no one knows its [true] interpretation except Allah. But those firm in knowledge say, \”We believe in it. All [of it] is from our Lord.\” And no one will be reminded except those of understanding.” (Quran 3:7)

– “And We did not give Prophet Muhammad, knowledge of poetry, nor is it befitting for him. It is not but a message and a clear Quran. To warn whoever is alive and justify the word against the disbelievers.” (Quran 36:69-70)

This is called Tafseer al-Quran bi al-Sunnah (the explanation of the Quran by the Sunnah).

– The Companions of the Prophet (may Allah be pleased with them): They are the ones who witnessed the revelation and learned directly from the Prophet. They sometimes explained

After the Companions of the Prophet, the best sources of Tafseer are the Tabi’un, who were the successors of the Companions. They were the second generation of Muslims, who were born after the death of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and learned directly from the Companions. They sometimes explained the meaning or context of some verses or words to their students, either verbally or through their actions. This is called Tafsir al-Quran bi al-Tabi’un (the explanation of the Quran by the Tabi’un). Some famous Tabi’un include Hasan al-Basri, Sa’id ibn al-Musayyib, and Qatada ibn Di’ama al-Sadusi.

After the Tabi’un, the next generation of Muslims is known as the Tabi’ al-Tabi’in. They were the third generation of Muslims, who were born after the death of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and learned directly from the Tabi’un. They sometimes explained the meaning or context of some verses or words to their students, either verbally or through their actions. This is called Tafsir al-Quran bi al-Tabi’ al-Tabi’in (the explanation of the Quran by the Tabi’ al-Tabi’in). Some famous Tabi’ al-Tabi’in include Sufyan al-Thawri, Sufyan ibn `Uyaynah, Malik Ibn Anas, Abu Yusuf, Muhammad al-Shaybani, Al-Awza’i, Abdullah ibn Mubarak, Al-Shafi’i, Zaid bin Ali, Al-Layth Ibn Sa’d, Hammad Ibn Zayd, Makki ibn Ibrahim, Al-Fudayl ibn ‘Iyad, Dawood At-Tai and Sari al-Saqat.

After the Tabi’ al-Tabi’in, the next generations of Muslims continued to study and interpret the Quran. Many scholars from different schools of thought and regions of the Islamic world wrote their own Tafsir, or commentary on the Quran. These scholars used various methods and sources to explain the meaning and context of the Quranic verses, including linguistic analysis, historical context, and theological interpretation. Some famous Tafsir works include Tafsir al-Tabari by Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari, Tafsir al-Qurtubi by Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Qurtubi, and Tafsir Ibn Kathir by Ismail ibn Kathir.
